EXAMINER C - PART 1
Requirements: A horse in a stable, flat hard trot up area and snaffle bridle
Conformation
C1. Describe a horse fully, including sex, colour, size, age, markings, type and work suited to.
C2. Horseman-like terms or equivalent terms.
C3.Have knowledge of vetting horses for purchase.
C4. Societies and associations connected with the care of horses and ponies
Health and Condition
C5. What to look for when inspecting the horses first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
C6.Getting a tired horse to stale. Recognising and dealing with symptoms of exhaustion, stress or dehydration after competition or hunting.
C7. The urinary system as related to practical problems.
C8. Taking a temperature
Lameness
C9. Running a horse up for veterinary inspection and comment on action.
C10.How to detect lameness.
C11. Detection of heat and swelling in the horse's leg.
C12. Seats of lameness. Splints, curbs, spavins, etc. Where to find them, what they are, causes and treatments.
C13. Recognition and treatment of diseases and ailments of the foot
EXAMINER C - PART II
Requirements:
One horse in stable, Feed room with adequate feed samples, hay barn if possible.
Feeding
C14. Recognition of good and poor condition and reasons for them.
C15. Rules of watering and feeding and the digestive system.
C16. Organisation of feedstore; rodent control.
C17. Hay and alternatives - horsehage, haylage, etc. Type, qualities, purchasing, storage, quantities to be fed.
C18. Recognition of basic traditional feedstuffs. Knowledge of coarse mixes, nuts, micronised and cooked feedstuffs. Advantages; disadvantages; constituents - carbohydrates, proteins, fats, oils, minerals, vitamins. Quality, quantities to be fed.
C19. Preparation of boiled feeds and reasons for using.
C20. Reasons for use of minerals, additives and probiotics
C21. Green fodder and succulents.
C22. Tempting a difficult feeder, relating to a young , old or sick horse.
Exercise and Fitness
C23. Work and feed when changing horse from one job to another or rest during the year.
C24. Getting a horse fit for competition. Interval training distance and speed.
C25. Understand the use of Horse-walkers.
C26. Relation of feeding to work and condition.
C27. Basic knowledge of the skeletal and muscular systems and their effect on performance and movement.
C28. The lymphatic, and endocrine systems as they relate to practical problems, such a Lymphangitis.
C29. Respiratory system, relating to fitness.
C30. Unsoundness of the respiratory system. Whistling, roaring, broken wind, allergies and how to cope with them.
