Susie Nodder and Total Caro finish 3rd in the Open Dengie Championship - Report by Susie Nodder

On the 29th March

(which happened to be

my fifteenth birthday),

I travelled up to Warwickshire for the Open Dengie Finals with my mum and of course, T.C. After a three hour drive we arrived at Moreton Morrell College, where the championships were being held. We watched the end of the first round and the entire second round of the smaller Dengie. I was a bit worried when they put the fences up to the height I would be jumping, 1:15m or 3ft9ins. When we walked the course I grew increasingly anxious as it was the biggest track I had ever jumped and everything was full up.

I was last to go in the first round, so I watched quite a few other people jumping and learning from the mistakes they made. The commentator kept saying how difficult the related distances were and by the time it was my turn, there were only two clears and eight riders on four faults. It was scary but quite exciting to be in such a large arena with so many people watching. I had to push on over every jump, and T.C. cleared everything except for the planks, which she only just knocked down. So by the end of the first round, there were still the two clears and nine people on four faults. Then the commentator announced that only the clears would jump off, and the four faulters’ placings would be decided on their timings from the first round. We had to wait for a long time as the jumps were cleared away, and the tension built.

Finally the results were announced; I had been the fastest  four  faulter and was therefore placed third! The stewards gave me a rug to put on over T.C.’s saddle and a jacket to wear at the presentation. I also won a year’s free membership with BSJA! and a £10 voucher for Dengie feeds. Possibly the most exciting event of the entire day was when a reporter from Horse & Hound came over and interviewed me to be in next weeks issue!

I had a really great time and would like to thank everybody who has trained me and T.C. over the years!

Branch success at Area Dengie Show Jumping Competition
Saturday 8 March @ Sparsholt

With no less than 11 Wilton members having qualified for the Area Dengie Show jumping Competition hopes were high that we might see one or two qualify for the Final at the end of March.  There were around 45 entries in the competition and of the nine Wilton members competing six went clear in the first round.  There were around 32 to jump off against the clock over a fast track with few opportunities to cut corners or make particular turns.  Ruth Phillips was drawn early and set a very good pace to take an early lead.  Anna Featherstone followed shortly thereafter and shaved a little off Ruth's time to move into the lead herself. About half way through the jump off Alicia Sherborne rode a lovely round to move into the lead where she remained until close to the end, finally being beaten for time by a member of the West Hants branch.  All of our other members rode as well as they could, but were not quite able to get into the final line up.

So, many congratulations to Alicia Sherborne with Nelson who finished 2nd, Anna Featherstone with Dark Star who finished 4th and Ruth Phillips with High Jinks who finished 5th and all of whom qualifed for the finals.  Sadly none of them are able to go to these which will be held at Moreton Morrel in Warwickshire on 29 March as they all have other commitments.

Later in the day we had two members competing in the Open Dengie competition (the fences in this class are a bit bigger at 105cm to 110 cm in the first round) and Suzie Nodder with Total Caro did really well to ride a double clear and finished in 3rd place, just one hundreth of a second behind the 2nd placed competitor.  This excellent result has qualified Suzie for the Open Final at the end of March and we all wish her the best of luck at the Final.

Well done to all our members who qualified for the Area competition and especially to those who were so well placed on Saturday.
